Unten angehängt findet Ihr die englische Kurzbeschreibung der zwei Vorträge, die Stefan Thiesen und Ueli Dopatka am 23.April in Maastricht halten werden! Natürlich wird auch reichlich Zeit fuer gemeinsame Diskussionen vorhanden sein. Seid dabei bei diesem einmaligen Event und diskutiert mit zwei ganz besonders qualifizierten und dazu noch sehr sympathischen und lustigen Paläo-SETI-Experten! ;-)
"Paleo-SETI & Science" by Ulrich Dopatka (please refer to Ueli's biography on his private website):
There are not many subjects dealing with questions and research targets of science that have provoked such heated debate and controversial "black & white reactions" as Paleo-SETI. Apart from individual reasons why emotions run wild in discussions, the subject itself may be a reason… For if the basic idea of Paleo-SETI (that extraterrestrial intelligent beings have already visited Earth) would be proved, this would constitute one of the most epochal discoveries in the history of mankind affecting many different cultures. Independently of that, however, one can and should approach this controversial topic of ETI (extraterrestrial intelligence) in an objective and logically arguing manner.
There are facts, but also indices, probabilistic calculations, hypotheses and, of course, speculations that play a role in the pros and cons argumentations of the Paleo-SETI discussion. The diverging views stem from different departments of science, for which reason the subject fascinates the public in addition to the controversy of its basic idea. Many people can - and are supposed to - have their say and contribute their ideas. But which premises do the discussions proceed from, what\'s behind the debate, what are the scientific "basics"?
"Interstellar Remote Sensing & the Search for Life in Space" by Stefan Thiesen:
The use of new spectroscopic methods and space interferometers in combination with ground-based observation methods will enable an exact classification of extra solar planets. We will be able to make statements about whether a planet carries life or not by the very accurate analysis of the atmospheric composition. The view on far more advanced methods which could be carried out in the near future - such as the development of gravitation lens telescopes - mingles with rather philosophical and hypothetical considerations whether highly developed extraterrestrial civilizations could have already been observing planet earth for a long time.
Biography (not available on Stefan's business website): Stefan Thiesen is a true expert of Earth and Space Science and the author of various related books and publications. He studied Astronomy, Geosciences and Physics at the University of Münster and obtained a Master of Science degree in Earth and space Science at the University of Honolulu where he graduated in Astronomy with an emphasis on the bio-astronomical topic "Long term Stability of Planetary Ecosystems". Stefan Thiesen furthermore holds a Bachelor of Science degree of the State University of New York and a Master’s degree in Geography of the King's College London where he specialized in Climate Change Policy.
