Cargo Cult in Wewak
© Erich von Däniken

Wewak is a town with some 20,000 inhabitants at the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. It is the capital of the province of East Sepik. It is here, where a deeply pronounced kind of cargo cult has come into existence. During World War II natives had observed cargo airfcrafts landing. What had that to mean? Nobody of the natives could answer this question. So they began to make big straw models of aircrafts and to set them up on long runways. They did so as they hoped that then more "heavenly birds" would come and bring cargo to them.

They natives continued to do so also after World War II!
