The Sethos Temple
© Tatjana Ingold
Abydos is about 500 kilometres southern of Cairo and is one of the oldest places in Egypt. In prehistoric times, here has already been a religious centre. Archaeologist discovered here a 5000 year old tomb for eleven rulers from the two first dynasties, which was coated with bricks. Tourists, who come here, just get to see the temple of Sethos and the Osireion which is placed behind it.
The temple of Sethos was built from limestone, 56 meters wide and 157 meters long. In the temple there are some of the gaudiest and most beautiful relieves of whole Egypt. At many relieves there can be seen head-high Djed-stilts. The temple is also famous for the so called "Panel of the king". It is a chart-like bill on which contain the names of 76 Egyptian kings from Menes until Seti I. (approx. 3000 - 1366 BC). Only a few pharaohs from the interim and the 18.Dynasty are missing. Behind the temple of Sethos there is a spectacular construction which is called Osireion and has a completely different architectural style than the temple.
Mostly unknown is the fact, that at Abydos just as at Sakkara there are untold thousands of animal-mummies under the earth. At the beginning of the 20.century, archaeologists discovered subterranean corridors with thousands of dog-mummies.
